5 Step Process of IUI procedure
Step 1
Stimulation
In an IUI cycle oral medications and hormone injections are given to stimulate the ovaries. It helps produce more than one egg, to enhance the chances of achieving pregnancy with IUI.
Step 2
Monitoring egg growth with ultrasound
We do transvaginal scans to monitor each follicle and check growth in response to the medication through scans. In one treatment cycle, you need to undergo three to four scans.
Step 3
Egg Release
When 1 to 3 follicles reach a mature size of more than 18 mm, HCG injection is administered to facilitate ovulation approximately 36 hours later.
Step 4
Insemination
The insemination is usually performed approximately 24-36 hours after the HCG injection. The healthy and best swimming sperms are separated from the semen by special preparation techniques for artificial insemination. The insemination procedure is painless and takes about 5 minutes. The sperm is inserted inside the womb, and the patient is advised to lie down for 15 minutes following the procedure.
Step 5
Follow Up
The patient is advised follow up after two weeks of IUI procedure for a urine pregnancy test. If the test result is positive, an ultrasound is recommended after two weeks. However, if the test results are negative, then the next IUI cycle can be initiated from day two of period.
Success rates of IUI at MotherToBe
The success rate of IUI is 15-20% every cycle. A couple is offered up to six IUI cycles. The majority of pregnancies occur in the first 3 cycles. If pregnancy isn’t achieved by the end of 3 cycles, further options like Laparoscopic key-hole surgery followed by 3 more cycles of IUI or IVF are discussed.
