Hatching is the process where the embryo herniates out of the egg’s outer shell. The outer surface of the egg is called the Zona Pellucida. Failure of the embryo to hatch may be one of the factors associated with implantation failure.
Assisted hatching is a procedure in which the zona pellucida (outer shell of the egg) is opened partially to facilitate hatching out of the embryo and thus implantation and pregnancy.
What is Laser Assisted Hatching (LAH)?
Using a laser and the assistance of a powerful microscope, the embryologists make a small opening in the zona pellucida without damaging the embryo. This opening facilitates the embryo to more easily hatch out of the shell to implant in the wall of the uterus.
Who must consider Laser Assisted Hatching?
Women of advanced maternal age –
more than 40 years of age.
Women with poor quality embryos
Women with two or more failed IVF
cycles.
Frozen embryo transfer cycles
